Coming off my previous round, I wanted to take a step back and try to play a fun, relaxing round of golf, in hopes to get back into the proper mindset and to gain a bit of confidence with my game. So I met up with Trent at Deerfield Golf Club and Learning Center in Riverwoods, Illinois, located approximately 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. Deerfield Golf Club, which opened in 1974, is the only golf course that is part of the Deerfield Park District.

The course features the standard four par-3 and four par-5 holes for a total par of 72 at a length of 6,816 yards from the back tees. The course has five sets of tees, with the forward tees playing at a length of 5,014 yards. The fairways are mostly flat and surrounded by large trees, and they seemed more narrower than most traditional courses I’ve played, which added a bit of difficulty to the course. Water touches eight holes, three of which you’ll need to carry over on your tee shot. Bunkers are found on all holes, both near the fairways and the greens. The undulating greens are average in size with some challenging breaks, and the speed of the greens seemed to be about average. Overall, the course looked in great condition, and it seems to be well maintained. I think this is a beautiful course, probably among my favorites in Chicago, and it’s a course that all skill levels could enjoy.

I definitely felt more relaxed this round, though I wish my score could have reflected that. Nearly all of my drives went right, either pushed right or sliced right. I made only one straight drive throughout the round. As bad as this sounds, I’m actually okay with this, because even though they weren’t straight, at least I was making decent contact with the ball. One thought that Trent mentioned was to shorten the length of the driver a bit, because Taylormade makes their shafts a little longer than most other companies. I tried this during the round, by changing the location of my grip, but didn’t notice any immediate improvements. This is something I’ll need to work on at the range. All of my other shots (fairway wood, hybrid, irons, wedges) were fairly random, but generally decent. My putting was also random, and I didn’t feel as comfortable or confident with my short putts (3-5′ range). This is also something I need to work on a bit more.

I ended up shooting a 107 for the round (35 over par, 52 on the front nine, 55 on the back nine). This consisted of one par, six bogeys, four double bogeys, and the rest triples. I 1-putted twice and 3-putted six times. If I could have straightened up my drives, I think I could have shot under 100. Now I know what I need to work on more at the range.
